Wednesday Ramblings - Grocery Store Edition

Rondell and I are trying to get really serious about saving money. The area where we tend to overspend the most is grocery shopping. So last night we went to the store and left with these observations:

~ Kroger brand "Raisin Bran Crunch" does taste like the original (I had a bowl last night)...but,

~ I just can't bring myself to buy Kroger brand blueberry waffles. They just aren't the same as Eggo's, I've tried...not the same.

~ Lump crab meat IS expensive, so I will take my friend Angela's advice and buy it from Aldi's (if you don't have an Aldi's, it's basically a discount store but they have pretty good products).

~ You know what's expensive...crackers...CRACKERS. I mean really, $4 for a box...of crackers. Baffles my mind.

~ I really hope Kroger Ranch dressing tastes like my beloved Hidden Valley Ranch dressing...love that stuff.

~ I remembered that cheaper is not always better (as seen here) so I went with the Ragu.

~ I remembered when you used to be able to buy shredded cheese for $1...oh the days.

~ Bananas are always 49 cents per pound...the price never changes.

We didn't end up really saving all that much in the end. I know that people do it all the time but I have yet to master the skill of saving a bundle at the grocery store...but I did have some good thoughts though.

I always seem to spend way too much money at the grocery store. What gets me are the paper products...napkins, t.p., and paper plates are so expensive! I don't buy a whole lot of stuff store brand, but it can save you a bunch of money if you do:)

Go to www.thegrocerygame.com. You will have to clip coupons but it is soooo worth it! I went to the store on Monday and my total savings was 130.61. I got almost $300 worth of groceries for about 47% off!

Do you shop at Costco? I buy almost everything there and it saves a bundle (crackers for instance...you can get a box of 12 sleeves of crackers for the price of 4 sleeves at the grocery). I do the rest of our grocery shopping at Target and Wal Mart. I only go to an actual grocery store about once a month for produce or anything that the other stores don't have. This is one area that I have saved a ton of $$. Good luck in your quest to save!

We always spend so much on groceries too. I think we have done pretty well switching over to Walmart and Sam's from Publix. We did a lot of research, literally taking notes on prices in Sam's and then comparing in the normal stores and only buy certain things there.

Meat is expensive too! This is where the bulk of our money goes too. It's crazy! Oh...one thing I have to always buy brand is peanut butter! Can't seem to find a store brand that is as good as JIF!

It is very hard to do, I always seem to spend over $100, but then when I try and cut stuff out I feel like I don't have enough, who knows!

I've learned, more than anything, not to go shopping when I'm hungry. LOL And I think you can still get shred cheese for about $1 at Wal-Mart. We buy the Great Value kind and it doesn't cost much.

I really need help saving at the grocery too :( I probably way overspend...but I get so used to buying the same thing and not looking at the price...I'm really missing out on some good cheaper items. But you're right...some things just aren't as good generic! I love shredded cheese! That's probably where all the money goes, LOL!

ALDI is awesome! I can spend $50/week there and we eat pretty well. It doesn't carry EVERYTHING we like... but with what I save over regular grocery prices... it works out to our advantage. Even crackers are cheap :). Their spaghetti sauce is pretty good.... the waffles are a bit small. You should TOTALLY check it out!

Ohhh girl! Let me take you grocery shopping! I will show you how to save money and sometimes the "name brand" is cheaper than the Kroger brand- however, I do like most Kroger brand things! :) Seriously- I ALWAYS save at least $40-$60 dollars in coupons alone, every single time I shop! :) Besides- I am always looking for an excuse to go to the Lewis Center Marketplace (have you been? It's amazingly beautiful!). :)

I buy Kroger brand Ranch and like it. We actually have an Aldi right next to Kroger but I've never been in there...maybe I should give it a go.

As for bananas, if you go to your local farmer's market, you can find them cheaper. Here they are 29cents a lb. That goes for most all produce. It's cheaper at a local farmer's market.

So when are you going to start a garden Kel? I know how you love to landscape and plant things, especially with you mom. Maybe this should be your year!! If you have any questions, I'd love to answer them. =)

You are right about the crackers. Rediculous. Coupons are great, but it does take time to plan meals, list the ingridients and find the right coupons.

With thegrocerygame.com, (tried it) you have to really stick to it or they just keep charging your account. I think there's a trial period of two weeks and then you can just cancel if you don't find it beneficial.

Happy shopping!

I totally agree with you the grocery bill is always crazy. We have a weekly budget and we can only spend cash (I never take my checkbook), which really helps cut down on the over spending. Then I usually always by the Walmart brand of items, well unless we have tried a product a can tell a huge difference. I say every little penny counts.
Have a fabulous day!

I have yet to have one of those " I bought a weeks worth of groceries for 3$" moments myself, maybe someday lol

That's where we over-spend too, and a goal of mine this year is to cut back on expenses. But you're right, sometimes name-brand is the only way to go!

I buy all our meat at Sam's once a month and just the essentials at the grocery store- If I send under $150 a week, I know I am doing good- but that is with formula, diapers, and baby food too!!

It seems like we spend a ton of money at the grocery store, but we always use everything we buy. I feel horrible when I leave the store $200.00 poorer, but it is nice to have a houseful of food.

I really love Sam's and Walmart. Walmart b/c I the kids. I like a one stop shop. And Sam's I buy stuff in bulk.

Great post!!
