Garden Clean Up!

One of the many reasons that we bought this house was because of the yard and one of my missions is to get it restored to the beautiful backyard that it once was (I've talked about this before here).

Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon was spent working in the yard. We pulled weeds, cut grass, edged flower beds, raked leaves, added top soil, spread turf builder and split a few of these:

Hosta are some of the easiest plants around...they don't take a lot to maintain and there are a lot of different types. They are perennials, so they come back each year...usually bigger than the year before. Since they do grow bigger each year, you can split them and replant them. The picture below shows what my beds look like after we split two of my hosta...in the bed on the left the first and third hosta are the replanted ones. It's the gift that keeps on giving. NOTE: Look at all of those lawn bags...whew!

Dirt always overflows from the flower beds onto the walkway so Rondell added the pavers along the walkway. We've had different lining before but this is by far the best...I love the way it turned out:

In the back Rondell dug up a bush that was not so pretty. This is potentially where we'll put our vegetable garden.

We also gave some more love to the back (which I was supposed to do last year, but failed somewhere along the way). We pulled 1001 weeds, raked a ton of leaves, picked up a ton of branches, edged the big flower bed, and added some manure (eww) and top soil:

It is amazing how quickly the soil dries. To the left you can see my decorative grass, which is growing in nicely since I cut down all of the dead growth (on the other side of the decorative grass with where I'll replant more Mexican Heather...loved those!). In the middle you can barely see another hosta coming up (I just planted it last year). Then to the right are my day lilies...they will bloom a beautiful orange flower.

There's still more to do (I see bags and bags of mulch in my future), but it looks so much nicer already. I'll share more once we start planting flowers (which may not be until May).

Happy Gardening!

The pavers around the flower beds are great! We used left over bricks from building our house to line our flower beds. All your stuff in the back looks so green...right now all we have that is green is our way over grown grass:)

The pavers look really good, Rondell did a great job. They'll keep the dirt in and look fabulous too.
I am like you, I did a ton of yard work that I have put off for like, four years this year. My yard is looking so very good, I am so excited to grow things this year!

Ohh..never heard of the hostas, but I think I might look for some! I need something that keep coming back. The Mexican Heather, I love that! The slight purple flowers are oh so pretty. We had some planted at our home in Bama when I was growing up.

It looks great. your grass is so healthy too. We need some more mulch too. I love the Hostas. Those are my kind of plants. I kill everything. LOL When we had our landscaping done I told them to plant things that didn't need anything but water to survive. I do not have a green thumb at all. Your yard looks great.

It looks great Kelli. We have been in our house 9 years and the yard gets a little better each year. We are putting in a fence this year. If you want me to give you some starts of some nice day lilies or shasta daisy or hosta or almost anything..I would be happy to break you off a chunk. We have a ton of perrenials.

We have alot to clean up still...lots of weed pulling and mulch too. Your yard looks great! I know you will enjoy this summer! We have some hostas too...but Dan takes care of those, I do not have a green thumb! I plant flowers in pots for the porch and the deck...and they're lucky to live through the summer!

I found your blog from Views from My Kitchen Sink. I'll be stopping by. Love your perspective and wish with all my heart we could grow hostas here. AZ is not that friendly, I'm afraid!

I love hostas, too, but we call them deer salad out here. The first year mine came up really nicely and they were just about to bloom pretty purple flowers. Those flowers must have been like little flags invinting the deer to supper because the next morning they were munched to the ground.

Now that there are more houses and more dogs in the neighborhood, my hostas are doing better.
